Jesus sends out the Seventy-Two

God puts a perfect picture of what living mission looks like in Luke 10, if you are going on a mission trip you have to read this, if you want to fully live for Christ you have to read this. God tells us exactly how we are to live on mission so we can spread His word, if we try to go on our own understanding and strength we won’t succeed, because we need to follow God’s lead in order spread His word. Here’s the passage and my notes on it.

Luke 10:1-24
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace be to this house!” 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.” 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. 13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. 16 “The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” 17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

-God doesn’t send us by ourself or unequipped.
-He sends us to places where He is going to work, we have to listen to where God is calling us.
-many people need Jesus, few people go out and share him.
-ask God to call you somewhere, again listen to what He is saying, don’t just think of something you want to do, don’t go alone.
-you are not going alone, but it won’t be easy, possibly dangerous.
-don’t stall, don’t stock up on your things so you’re comfortable, just go when you are called.
-welcome The Lord and Holy Spirit first wherever you go.
-focus on a group of people, spend quality time with them to teach them.
-do not go hungry, eat the bread of life to sustain you spiritually and food to substation you physically so you may work.
-take great joy when people welcome you, The Lord is moving in that place, trust him and do whatever he tells you so He can be glorified.
-do not go places where God is not calling you, there are places who do not know God but will welcome you, if they don’t you may not belong there.
-but don’t leave them without the gospel, “The kingdom of God is near”.
-you cannot make them listen to you God will judge and do what is needed.
-When people hate us they actually hate God, we are doing what God tells us when we listen and follow his lead, whatever happens there is a reason that only God may know, but he is the center of it all.
-if we are rejected God is rejected, go where you are called, preach to all who hear, continue without ceasing because some may turn you away but if one person listens that is one more person to join you in God’s kingdom.
– you will return with growth in God and joy when you see how He works, definitely there will be trial and sadness, but God works in amazing ways when you listen.
-God will control demons from harming you, satan from hurting you if you call onto Him.
-rejoice most of all that you are going to heaven, not over your control with spirits and demons, God is making that possible which is amazing, but you should be more amazed that since you once had these spirits working in you, twisting your mind, that God overcame them so you can go to heaven.
-have the faith of child to learn these things from God, don’t close your heart, mind, soul, or strength to anything he is doing.
-Jesus and God have to be present where you spread the gospel, don’t rely on just yourself or your understanding.
-God needs to chose the people you evangelize to, ask for god to reveal those people.
-you are blessed that you can do this, you are bless that you see these amazing works, you are blessed that you can go to heaven, you are blessed when God has chosen you, and you are blessed when God works through you.
-many people have looked for what you have, but they can’t find it when God is not working where they are. Rely on God and ask Him where you should go so that work may be done, ask God to lead you so you don’t pointlessly go on about what people don’t understand.
-God needs to work trough you in order for the gospel to be spread, let Him.
